Mold Tools and Accessories: A Practical Buying Checklist

A mold accessory can look correct in a photograph and still be the wrong part for your tool. A guide pin with a different shoulder, a bush from another series or a cooling fitting with the wrong thread can delay assembly. Start an enquiry with the component's identity and mating details, then confirm size, quantity and supply scope.

Separate the mold tool, mold base and accessories

For an injection-molding enquiry, the complete mold tool is the assembly that forms and releases the product. The mold base provides its supporting plate arrangement. Accessories and standard components perform particular tasks within that assembly. Cutting tools used to machine the plates are a different purchase, so make the meaning of ‘mold tools’ clear in your request.

Ask for an itemised bill of materials rather than assuming a mold-base price includes every accessory. Mark each line as included, supplied separately or supplied by your own workshop. This gives purchasing and assembly the same view of what will arrive.

Recognise the main component groups

• Guidance: guide pins or pillars and their bushes help guide the moving plate arrangement. Identify the mating pair and the required fit.
• Ejection: ejector pins, sleeves and blades help release the molded part. The tool design determines the form and contact area.
• Machine interface and feed: locating rings and sprue bushes have different jobs; check both against the approved assembly and machine interface.
• Cooling connections: connectors, plugs, seals and internal flow components belong to the specified cooling circuit.
• Assembly and support: screws, dowels, support pillars and other hardware should follow the component schedule.

Match the interface, not only the main dimension

For a replacement guide component, provide the maker or catalogue series, nominal diameter, overall length, shoulder or flange details and matching component reference. A measurement taken from a worn surface is evidence of its present condition; it is not automatically the original nominal specification. Compare it with the drawing or the original order before choosing the replacement.

DME's locating-ring guidance describes different installation details and machine-side clearances. This is a useful reminder to check the complete interface rather than ordering a ring by its outside diameter alone. Keep the locating-ring reference and sprue-bush reference on separate lines so a change to one does not silently change the other.

For cooling fittings, state the thread designation, connection series, hose size and the operating conditions supplied by the process team. Do not infer thread compatibility from a similar appearance. For all components, ask the supplier to flag a proposed substitute before dispatch rather than replacing a specified item without review.

Specify the ejector as part of the ejection system

A pin, sleeve and blade do not provide the same contact geometry. HASCO's ejection guide shows why the component type and ejection arrangement must be considered together. Include head style, working dimensions, material or surface treatment where specified, and whether the supplied item requires finishing. Have the tool designer approve changes to the selected type or working length.

Send a parts list the supplier can quote

1. Identify the tool: mold number, drawing revision and the reason for the enquiry.
2. Identify each component: name, maker or catalogue series, part code and drawing position.
3. Record dimensions and units: include mating, head, shoulder, thread and fit information where relevant.
4. State quantity: distinguish pieces installed in the mold from additional spares.
5. Define the supplied condition: standard catalogue length, finished to drawing or another agreed condition.
6. List the requested delivery date and inspection or documentation requirements.

For example, a replacement enquiry could identify ‘Tool T-24, drawing revision D, guide bush at position 7, two replacement pieces plus one spare, original catalogue reference attached’. Add the dimensioned drawing and identify anything that has changed since the original order. A photograph helps orientation; it should accompany the specification rather than replace it.

Keep the base and accessory enquiries connected

If the job also needs a new mold base, keep its configuration reference beside the accessory list. Use Deulec's mold-base configurator for the available plate and assembly options, then send any additional component requirements through the enquiry page. Ask our team to confirm availability and scope for the named items; the examples in this guide are not a stock list.
